$1m Global Teacher Prize: Gov Abiodun rewards Maths teacher with N5m, house

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has rewarded Kayode Adewale, a Mathematics teacher recently shortlisted for the $1 million Global Teacher Prize, with N5 million and a bungalow.

Adewale, who teaches Mathematics using innovative methods and local language at Imagbon/Imaka Comprehensive High School, Imagbon, Ogun State, was named among the top 50 finalists for the prestigious prize.

The Global Teacher Prize is an annual initiative by the Varkey Foundation in collaboration with UNESCO and GEMS Education, aimed at recognising exceptional educators.

In a statement released on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, Governor Abiodun described Adewale as an “unwavering advocate of educational excellence” and announced his appointment as the Ogun State Education Ambassador.

The governor said, “As a state that prides itself on being the education capital of Nigeria, we are immensely proud to celebrate one of our own, Kayode Adewale, a visionary educator who has earned a place among the Top 50 teachers globally in the prestigious Global Teacher Prize.

“This US $1 million initiative by the Varkey Foundation, supported by UNESCO, recognizes educators who have made extraordinary contributions to transforming lives and communities through education.”

Highlighting Adewale’s achievements, Abiodun praised his innovative teaching methods and dedication. “A proud alumnus of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun—Nigeria’s premier institution for teacher training and one of the top 10 globally—Kayode’s innovative teaching methods and dedication to transforming education have earned him local and international acclaim.”

To honour Adewale’s feat, the governor promised a cash reward of N5 million and a bungalow in any location of his choice within Ogun State.

“Today, as a government committed to fostering excellence, we are proud to honor Kayode Adewale as the Ogun State Education Ambassador,” the statement read.

Adewale, who previously won the Best Teacher Award in Ogun State in 2020, has been lauded for his impactful contributions to education. Governor Abiodun commended him for his humility and dedication to uplifting his community, describing him as an inspiration to educators across Nigeria.

Tribune Online reports that Adewale was earlier rewarded with full employment by his alma mater, Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), for his landmark achievement.
