165 specialised nurses graduate from UCH

The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan has graduated 165 specialised nurses to boost the health care work force in the nation.

UCH’s Chief Medical Director, Professor Jesse Otegbayo at the joint graduation ceremony of the Federal Training Centre for Teachers of Health Sciences at the hospital, said they should translate the skills and knowledge they had acquired to ensure better health services in the country.

Professor Otegbayo, who was represented by Dr Toyin Lawal, the hospital’s deputy chairman, Medical Advisory Committee for Education and Training, stated that as specialised nurses, they should continue to learn more to improve their skills as nurses and teachers.

The special guest of honour at the occasion, Dr Aderonke Adeola, at the joint graduation ceremony underscored the importance of teamwork in health care delivery.

According to her, the quality of health care delivery is attributable to the quality and content of the training curricula to which one is exposed.

Earlier, the graduation’s guest lecturer, Dr Beatrice Ohaeri in her keynote address, urged the Federal Government to maintain its momentum after the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure adequate budgetary allocation for health, prioritise the maintenance of equipment and facilities for COVIID-19 pandemic response and prosecute any official found guilty of mismanagement of health funds and other corrupt practices in the health sector.

Ohaeri, the acting head, Department of Nursing, University of Ibadan, stated that lack of preparedness was a major contributor to the struggles experienced by health care workers when COVID-19 started.

According to her, “COVID-19 serves as a lesson in disguise that the health care infrastructural development should be supported with fund allocation by government and international organisations.”
