16-year-old medicine seller remanded for setting colleague ablaze in Kwara

An Ilorin Magistrate court, on Tuesday, remanded a 16-year-old female apprentice (name withheld) for allegedly killing her colleague, Fatimon Jako, by setting her ablaze over a minor misunderstanding that reportedly ensued between them.

The accused was taken before Magistrate F.O. Olokoyo for criminal trespass, mischief by fire and culpable homicide, contrary to Sections 327, 342 and 221 of Penal Code Law.

The Tribune Online gathered that the incident occurred at Moshegada, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State and was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Ilorin for discreet investigation.

The defendant, who is an apprentice at one Joseph Friday Patent Medicine shop, reportedly got the petrol she used to perpetrate the act from her master’s store.

The police report stated that the accused trespassed into the room of the deceased while she was asleep, poured the petrol on her, ignited matches and eventually burnt her alive.

In a bid to save her life, the victim was rushed to the University of Ilorin Teaching for treatment but was later confirmed dead by a doctor as a result of high degree burns she suffered.

The defendant, during the course of the investigation, confessed to the crime claiming she set her colleague on fire because of a minor misunderstanding that resulted in malice.

The prosecutor, Inspector Sekunda Olayide, informed the court that the matter is brought to court with a motion exparte.

Olayide said the matter is a capital offence, adding that the accused could not be admitted to bail.

Magistrate F. O Olokoyo, who only took cognisance of the suit because of lack of jurisdiction to try it, adjourned till August 30, 2021, pending the outcome of advice from the Ministry of Justice.

Olokoyo then ordered her remanded in a juvenile facility or appropriate custody in Ilorin.
