12 killed, several others injured in Plateau

Published by

As various indigenous groups and the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) continued to trade blame over killings in the Mangu local government area of Plateau State, no fewer than 12 people were brutally killed on Saturday in the troubled Council area.

Over the weekend, the MACBAN alleged that the natives conspired with the state security outfit “Operation Rainbow” to unleash mayhem on the Fulani residing in the local government last week, during which the association claimed some of its members were killed and several houses burned.

In a swift reaction, the National President of the Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA), Sir Joseph Gwankat, warned MACBAN to stop playing victim, saying the Fulanis were responsible for the killings.

The Fulani militia attacked Farin-Kassa Kerana and Sabon-Gari communities of the Mangu District of Mangu local government in what appears to be a retaliatory attack at around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday.

A source close to the two communities adjacent to one another disclosed that the Fulani militias, who probably divided themselves into two, unleashed terror on the two communities simultaneously, adding that the attack lasted for more than an hour.

“It was a night of horror; the twelve killed, mostly women, were shot while running for their lives, and several others were wounded. Those who sustained injuries are presently receiving treatment at the Mangu General Hospital. Apart from this, many houses were burned and farms destroyed.

“We don’t know our offence; we have never attacked the Fulani living among us. We want to believe that the Fulani attackers were on the invitation of the local ones because their houses and properties were spared,” he said.

The source further stated that it was a deliberate attack to annihilate the Mwaghavul people in the local government, adding that the attacks have become a daily occurrence without any serious intervention from both the government and security agencies.

The Nigerian Tribune further gathered that villages and communities in Mangu are gradually becoming desolate as inhabitants have started fleeing for fear of further attack.

Efforts to reach the spokesman of Plateau State Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo proved abortive as several phone calls put across to him were ignored.
