Ten days after he was kidnapped in his exquisite pub by armed hoodlums along Oron road in Uyo, the Akwa-Ibom State capital, Senator Nelson Effiong, his abductors are demanding the sum of N200 million.
Tribune Online reports that gunmen stormed the pub on September 6 and shot sporadically injuring no fewer than eight patrons of the pub. The senator who represented Eket Senatorial District (Akwa Ibom South) in the Eight National Assembly was whisked away by three hoodlums in a Toyota Camry car.
A close family source said the former Speaker of the State House of Assembly is alive as his abductors are demanding N200m ransom.
According to the source, who craved anonymity, “the kidnappers have contacted the family with an outrageous demand of N200million before he could be released.”
He added that “security agencies have been working extra hard with the family to ensure he is released unharmed.
“I cannot say more than this because security agencies have warned us against divulging information so as not to jeopardize the chances of apprehending the perpetrators, but our happiness is the senator is alive.”
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent Odiko Macdon, has stated that the Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Amiengheme Andrew, was miffed at the security breach that led to the abduction of the former federal lawmaker.
He added that the CP had since put all machinery in motion to ensure that the Oron-born Senator Effiong is released unharmed, urging good-spirited members of the civil society to volunteer intelligence to security agencies on criminal elements in the state.
“The Commissioner of Police is miffed about it and has promised to spare no resources in ensuring his safe rescue and the perpetrators brought to book,” he assured.
