Add personal branding, digital marketing to schools’ curriculum, Akparanta urges FG

One of Africa’s fast-rising brand strategists and  Director/CMO of Activecode Business Hub, a forex, ICT based/digital marketing company in Nigeria, Mr. Kelvin Akparanta, has called on the federal government to, as a matter of urgency, include personal branding and digital marketing into secondary and tertiary education curriculum as a way of curbing unemployment amongst youths and young school leavers.
Akparanta strongly advocated and believed that digital skills should be taught as basic subjects/courses in Nigerian schools.
He disclosed this through a series of tweets on his official Twitter page ‘@bigbrokelvin’ while tweeting of his book titled ‘Everything Personal Branding and Digital Marketing.
His tweets read: ”I believe Personal Branding and Digital Marketing should be taught in Nigerian schools as basic courses. This would be a strategy to revamp our economy as a nation as we are in a digital and entrepreneurial age.
”Personal branding is important in today’s economy because you are the most important selling point of your service/product. This is a powerful statement, but true. People trust people, they are looking for someone they can proudly recommend and advocate for.
”If your personal branding is strong, you will have strangers telling everyone that you are the best of the best. Claiming to be the best is much more powerful coming from someone who isn’t you, or your dad!
”If the basics of personal branding and the importance of it are inculcated in the minds of young people they will grow up being stronger and better career professionals and business tycoons.
”Millennials are changing the way we are thinking. Especially those that graduated during the recession. Imagine getting an expensive degree, then having to go live in your parent’s house as there are no jobs for you.
”With the recession blamed on corruption and other factors in the nation, this has left a bad taste in many mouths. Not to mention higher rent, living costs and healthcare expenses. People today want to spend their Naira wisely.
”They want to support a business that stands for something, someone they can proudly recommend. This is where personal branding comes in.
”So, if the Nigerian government can look into this, I believe we will be building the next set of World-class professionals & business generation And yeah, I’ve done the full work on writing a book on Personal Branding and Digital Marketing. The course outline is already set up and could be improved on for a viable classroom experience.’
“The idea is to create a perfect resource for beginner-to-advanced professionals and digital marketers looking to learn new skills or improve on existing ones.
“The e-version of the book is in the works and would be in major Nigerian and foreign languages, Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa and of course French to cater for the needs of the French-speaking parts of Africa.”
Disclosing that he has consulted for major brands in Nigeria, including Carnival Calabar, Miss Africa, Cally Air and more, the ICT expert said his book, when put into practical use, can curb unemployment to the barest minimum.
“So, if the Nigerian government can look into this, I believe we will be building the next set of world-class professionals and business generation.
“I hereby implore the minister of education to explore ways on how to make these assertions a reality. Take a look at huge multinational IT companies like Google, Amazon and so on that are creating their own curriculum, changing the narrative in technology because they believe that the future is digital and it all starts with personal branding,” Akparanta said.
While emphasising the uniqueness of digital marketing and branding, he said the skills can be applied by lawyers, engineers, farmers, civil servants, accountants, politicians, business owners, medical doctors and many others in plying their trade.
