No fewer than seven communities have been submerged by flood in Shiroro local government area of Niger State as a result of the ongoing construction of Zungeru hydropower dam.
District Head of Gurumana in the Local Government Area stated this on Saturday during a surprise visit by Governor Abubakar Sani Bello who also seized the opportunity to pay a visit to Gwada Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp.
Umaru said the affected communities submerged by the flood were Gurumana, Palei, Nmachi, Npani, Zangoro, Masuku and Magani and called on the state government to come to their aid.
He said most of the affected persons from the communities were seeking shelter in Kuta and Gwada IDPs camps, calling on the Federal government to immediately pay compensation to the people of the affected communities.
Responding, Governor Sani-Bello, expressed regrets over the conditions of the IDPs at the camps and said that efforts were ongoing to restore normalcy in communities affected by armed bandits.
Bello said he would urge the Federal Ministry of Works to ensure the immediate release of funds for payment of compensation and relocation of the people of the affected communities submerged by flood.
