Governor Dauda Lawal chaired the Zamfara State Executive Council meeting on Monday.
According to a statement by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, Lawal received a briefing from the committee tasked with determining the status of Zamfara State and Local Government Pension Contributions.
The meeting, held at the council chamber in the Government House, Gusau, addressed several developmental issues beneficial to Zamfara State.
It was highlighted that the council received a progress report on the ongoing urban renewal in Gusau, the state capital, and was briefed on the proposed upgrading and modernization of the Sardauna Memorial Stadium in Gusau, among other subjects.
The statement mentioned, “On October 9th, 2023, the Zamfara State Executive Council formed a committee, headed by the Head of Service, to establish the status of Zamfara State and Local Government Pension Contributions.
During the council briefing, Ahmad Aliyu Liman, Chairman of the committee and the Head of Service of Zamfara State, explained that the committee’s objective was to investigate the alleged misappropriation of funds deducted from the salaries of state and local government civil servants for their contributory pension scheme.
“These funds were expected to be remitted to the Pension Funds Administrators (PFAs), responsible for managing the workers’ retirement savings accounts (RSAs) in the state.
The committee chairman stated that the non-remittance was a serious violation of the Pension Reform Law/Act (2014) governing the conduct of the Contributory Pension Scheme as regulated by the National Pension Commission (PenCom).
“He further emphasised that the failure to remit these funds led to the PFAs’ inability to pay retirement and death benefits to the appropriate beneficiaries, resulting in a backlog of unpaid benefits that is currently overburdening the state government.
“Governor Lawal, as the Chairman of the Executive Council, expressed his willingness to provide the necessary support to settle all outstanding unpaid benefits.”
