Zamfara Assembly in crisis over LG tenure

Published by

Tension is now brewing in the Zamfara State House of Assembly as seven members challenge the extension of tenure of local government council chairmen and the suspension of four lawmakers which they described as illegal.

Addressing a press conference on Friday in Gusau, the aggrieved lawmakers explained that they are seven in the number who grouped themselves and joined G8 who fight imposition of candidates in the state.

Spokesman of the aggrieved lawmakers, Hon. Salisu Musa Tsafe representing Tsafe constituency in the state said four of them were suspended for their stand on local government tenure.

“Our suspension was illegal and would seek redress in the court,” he said.

He lamented that they were suspended in the House as a result of their non-acceptance of tenure extension of local government council chairmen, which they maintained was illegal.

“Our stand, which is constitutional, was the right step. Caretakers are to be appointed, not to get tenure extended. We stand by our words.”

Nigerian Tribune gathered that they are indications that the suspension of four members of state House of Assembly may not also be unconnected with their alleged romance with deputy governor, Malam Ibrahim Wakala who is now at loggerhead with Governor over the imposition of candidates in the state.

It could also be recalled that the suspension of aggrieved members followed a motion by the House leader, Isa Abdulmumuni at its sitting on Thursday.

Hon. Isah Abdulmumuni urged the House to suspend the members over what he described as the act of indiscipline and disobedience to the government and leadership of the state Assembly.

It could  be recalled that the Zamfara State House of Assembly on Wednesday extended the tenure of all the 14 local government chairmen in the state by three months.

The council chairmen tenure expired on January 2rd and with their extension, upto they would remup to April 2rd, 2019.

The extension was confirmed by the Speaker of the state house of assembly Alhaji Sanusi Rikiji, during the house sitting on Wednesday in the state.
