Young persons with disabilities trained in Adire craft in Ogun

Published by

IN a bid to promote inclusivity and empower disabled individuals, dozens of persons living with disabilities have been trained on how to make different Adire crafts by the UNESCO Institute for African Culture and International Understanding (IACIU) in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The participants, who were drawn from a school for children with special needs in Abeokuta, were particularly trained on the craft of making bags and fans using the Adire fabric.

Director of the Institute, Prof. Peter Okebukola, in his address during the training, held at the Premises of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), said the programme aimed to uplift and empower individuals with disabilities.

He noted that the institute recognises that everyone, regardless of their abilities, deserves equal opportunities to develop their skills and pursue their passions, hence the need for the training.

Okebukola described the programme as a stepping stone towards unlocking the immense potential in each participant while providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary for personal and professional growth.

The director said: “This training programme is a stepping stone towards unlocking the immense potential that resides within each participant, providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary for personal and professional growth.

“It reflects our time honoured shared belief that every individual, regardless of ability, deserves the opportunity to develop their skills, pursue their passions, and contribute meaningfully to the development of society.”

Okebukola also expressed the belief that every Nigerian, regardless of their abilities has the chance to attain their full potential and contribute to the development of the country.

“Together, we can build a world where everyone, regardless of their abilities, has the chance to reach their fullest potential,” he added.
