Mixed reactions have continued to trail the claim that Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar, was among three militants killed by the Israeli military during operations in Gaza.
Tribune Online reports that Sinwar, regarded as the mastermind behind the 7 October attacks on Israel, which claimed over 1,200 lives, was said to have likely been killed.
The death was, however, confirmed after DNA tests verified that Sinwar was indeed among three militants killed by the Israeli military
The news of the death has been greeted with diverse reactions from powerful countries.
Reacting to the news, United States President, Joe Biden described it as “a good day for Israel, for the United States, and for the world.”
According to him, the killing of Sinwar, which is similar to that of the 2011 killing of Osama Bin Laden, marked a day of relief for the people of Israel.
In a statement, shortly after the news, he said he looked forward to speaking with Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu to congratulate him on the mission’s success and discuss steps towards ending the conflict.
The statement reads partly, “Early this morning, Israeli authorities informed my national security team that a mission they conducted in Gaza likely killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. DNA tests have now confirmed that Sinwar is dead. This is a good day for Israel, for the United States, and for the world.”
United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that the country will not mourn Sinwar’s death.
Stammer condemned Sinwar for being the mastermind behind the infamous October 7 attacks on Israel, which claimed over 1,200 lives.
Reacting to the news, he said partly, ““As the leader of the terrorist group Hamas, Yahya Sinwar was the mastermind behind the deadliest day in Jewish history since the Holocaust, as 1200 people were slaughtered in Israel.
“Today my thoughts are with the families of those victims. The UK will not mourn his death.
The release of all hostages, an immediate ceasefire, and an increase in humanitarian aid are long overdue so we can move towards a long-term, sustainable peace in the Middle East.”
Reacting to the death, the Iranian mission to the United Nations stated that Sinwar’s death would bolster the resistance of the Palestinian people.
In a statement by the mission, Sinwar was compared to Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, a longtime adversary of Iran who was captured by American troops in 2003.
The statement read, “When U.S. forces dragged a disheveled Saddam Hussein out of an underground hole, he begged them not to kill him despite being armed. Those who regarded Saddam as their model of resistance eventually collapsed.
“However, when Muslims look up to Martyr Sinwar standing on the battlefield—in combat attire and out in the open, not in a hideout, facing the enemy—the spirit of resistance will be strengthened.
“He will become a model for the youth and children who will carry forward his path toward the liberation of Palestine. As long as occupation and aggression exist, resistance will endure, for the martyr remains alive and a source of inspiration.”
