Would you continue a job interview if you discovered your ex would be the one to interview you?

Unemployment and job security are serious issues among Nigerian teeming job seekers. TOSIN ADEPOJU and KINGSLEY ALUMONA sampled the opinions of people to know if they would continue a job interview if they discovered that their exes were to be their interviewers. Their opinions:

I will continue with the interview, because it is strictly business. She is my ex, and I have reasons why I parted ways with her. Being my ex does not mean we are enemies. And, of course, I am not there to feel or have emotions for her. My aim there is strictly business.

— OMOTOSO CHRISTOPHER

If we were on a good term before we departed, it will be a good opportunity for me to see him once again. However, if it were the opposite, I will summon courage and go on with the interview. I will try my best to perform well, and pray for luck to be on my side.

— FAUZIYA ADELEKE

Hmm, this is a serious situation. If my ex happens to be a member of an interview committee, it makes no difference at all because I can still keep a good relationship with my ex. I cannot imagine them wanting to be an obstacle to me and my chances of getting the job in the first place.

— MICHAEL NEWTON

I will comport myself, summon courage and answer the questions correctly to the best of my knowledge, the way I would have done without my ex being there.

AYO

I would not walk away from the interview because it would be seen as a defeat on my part to just leave after seeing him. I will stay calm and confident. I would only leave when it becomes too uncomfortable because he will be nervous and shocked to see me, as I would be too. During the interview session, I will try to be brief and answer the questions accordingly, so I can be done with the interview and leave.

— PRECIOUS IFY

If I meet my ex in an interview, I don’t think it will be a big deal for me because I haven’t had any bad experience with any of my exes before. Moreover, I will even be very happy to meet my ex again. I won’t feel jittery. In fact, it will be an opportunity for me to prove my worth, and make my ex to miss me more.

I cannot. Seeing him and walking away would make him feel on top of the world. It would make me feel cowardice. I would be myself, and make the interview formal. After the interview, he is free to say anything. Luckily, if I get the job, it would strictly be an employer-employee relationship between us. Nothing more.

— BISOLA

This is a funny question. But for me, I will not quit. It depends on the perspective on which we ended the relationship. For example, if it was distance that ended the relationship, this will be a very good reason to come together again because emotion will never die. Therefore, if the relationship was built on emotions, then the emotions will come back and the relationship will start afresh. But, if probably the guy is engaged, and the job is a very good one, I will just focus on what took me there and I believe he will definitely give me the job.

— ADENIJI DEBORAH

I will actually zero my mind off the feelings I have for him before and proceed with the interview. I will think of what always makes me happy, so I will not be saying something different during the interview.

— HAMZAT BLESSING

I will continue with the interview because it depends on individual’s maturity, and what led to the separation. It is not that we are not educated, just that we can’t continue with the relationship and got separated.

— ADEYANJU ADERONKE

I will proceed with the interview. If we separated on good terms, then there is no problem. However, if the reverse is the case, there is still no problem because business is business, and relationship is relationship. So, the two should not affect each other.

— AJAYI OLALEKAN

I will proceed with the interview. I have no business with him because I went there for a purpose. It’s left to him to employ me. My ex remains an ex, an example of false love and explanation of why I deserve better.

— ZAINAB

It depends on what separated us. If I was the one that gave him red card, I will not proceed because he may not want to give me the job. But if we both gave ourselves space, I will continue with the interview.

— MERCY

I will definitely continue with the interview. I know we would be in good terms despite the fact that we are no longer together. So, I do not think my appointment could be hindered.
