THE Supreme Council of Sharia in Nigeria has described inculcation of spiritual and moral values in the young generation of Nigerians and indeed the generality of the citizens as a prerequisite to tackling insecurity and other problems in the country.
The council stated this in Dutse through its National Vice-President I, Sheikh Abdulrashid Hadiyatullah, during a courtesy visit to the Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Muhammad Badaru Abubakar.
According to the council, rampant cases of adultery, rape of minors, homosexuality, augury, corruption, abuse of trust, abuse of public office, among other things, have reached an alarming level in the country.
“In any society where such vices become the order of the day, what will certainly follow are social and economic crises as it is happening now in Nigeria.
“The increase in the level of insecurity, kidnapping, insurgency, armed robbery, homicide, poverty and other social crises are a repercussion of the moral decadence in the society and can only be cured through spiritual societal reorientation,” Sheikh Hadiyatullah said.
He called on Governor Abubakar and other leaders, social and political, to join hands with religious bodies in this regard.
Governor Abubakar said his government had been working with religious leaders to promote norms and values and discourage all forms of social vices in the state.
“Presently, we are embarking on a serious campaign for people to understand the dictate of Islam and abide by it in all aspects of their social life,” he said.
The governor promised to continue collaborating with religious bodies, security agencies and all well-meaning members of the society to tackle the challenges in all respects.
