World Sight Day: Lions Club distributes 500 glasses to Ibadan residents

The Lions Club International District 404B3 distributed five hundred glasses to residents of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, to assist people with refractive errors in improving their vision.

The event took place at the Ibadan Southwest Local Government Secretariat and saw a large number of beneficiaries and Lions Club members from across Ibadan.

Speaking at the event, Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, expressed the state government’s commitment to partnering with and providing a conducive environment for development partners and non-governmental organisations ready to make meaningful contributions to the health sector.

Ajetunmobi, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusoji Adeyanju, noted that the state government had conducted free health missions over the past year.

He emphasised that the government alone cannot provide a quality healthcare system and that collaboration is essential.

Highlighting the importance of eye care, Dr. Ajetunmobi mentioned that out of the eight billion people worldwide, two point two billion individuals have some form of eye refractive error.

He reiterated that improving the health status of the people of Oyo State is a priority for the current administration and commended the organisation for its contributions to the infrastructural development of some state hospitals.

Lions Club District Governor for District 404B3, Chief Olayiwola Fadairo, explained that the exercise marked 2023 World Sight Day and aimed to contribute to the well-being of the public.

He noted that vision is one of the eight global causes for the year, with the district selecting it as the core project.

Fadairo further revealed that about six thousand three hundred and thirty-eight eyeglasses have been secured for distribution across the district.

In her brief remarks , the Sight Chairperson , District 404B3 , Ibadan Axis of the club ,Folasade Akinola explained that the Lion’s club being a global leader in community and humanitarian services had over the years organised series of activities and events aimed at making impact in the community.

She added that the outreach is the first step of a four -phase activity calendar adding the outreach featured free eye screening, free eye glasses , free drugs and eye surgery at subsidized rates for the community.
