World Orphan Day: Okowa distributes food, other items to orphanage homes

Published by

Wife of Delta State governor, Dame Edith Okowa, has expressed sadness over the indulgence of some caregivers in the  sale of children in their custody.

According to Okowa, most orphanage homes engage in acts that are not only  condemnable, but an  abomination before God, adding that because the children in their care  are not their biological children, some operators of such homes traffic them out of the country.

Speaking at the World Orphans Day celebration in Asaba, Dame Okowa, who,  however, exenorated caregivers in the state  from the unwholesome act,  encouraged them to be resolute in their care for the children.

The wife of the governor through her foundation, The 05 Initiative, distributed food items, toiletries and  cash to 42 registered orphanage homes and five adopted families, including a set of quintuplets (all girls).

She said the annual event was to evaluate the way children who are not of the same biological parents are treated having lost their parents.

Dame Okowa appreciated the caregivers for creating an atmosphere of love for the children while commending spirited organizations and individuals who partnered with 05 Initiative to make the yearly celebration a success.

She said: “It is a huge task, I urge you not to relent; keep sowing kindness , God is not unjust to forget your labour of love, you will reap in due season  if you faint not,” she said.

Reverend Canon Kingsley Dieli of St Barnabas Anglican Orphanage/Motherless Babies Home, Asaba, recipient of the food items described the event as glorious even as he called  on the well-to-do  to emulate Dame Okowa’s gesture by  spending  their wealth on the vulnerable.

The 05 Initiative, it will be recalled, had on yearly basis, paid the medical bills of indigent patients at the Federal Medical CentRe, Asaba even as it has constructed and equipped 12 sickle cell clinics in the state.
