World Earth Day: Environmentalists advocate end to plastic wastes

HOMEF’s message is clear and urgent: the Earth is suffocating under the weight of plastic pollution, and immediate action is needed to address this pressing environmental crisis. They emphasize the detrimental impact of single-use plastics on the planet’s ecosystems, from clogging water bodies to harming wildlife.

Dr. Nnimmo Bassey, the Executive Director of HOMEF, underscores the choice between prioritizing the planet’s well-being or succumbing to the convenience of plastics driven by profit motives. He advocates for a ban on single-use plastics and urges individuals to participate in efforts to eliminate plastic pollution.

The statistics provided by HOMEF are alarming, highlighting the massive scale of plastic production and the shockingly low rate of recycling. They commend global campaigns aimed at reducing plastic usage and stress the importance of embracing sustainable alternatives.

Bassey emphasizes the intrinsic rights of both Mother Earth and all living beings, calling for an end to destructive extractive activities and a transition to sustainable practices. The “Planet vs Plastics” campaign serves as a rallying cry for immediate action to combat plastic pollution and safeguard the health of the planet and its inhabitants.

Overall, HOMEF’s statement underscores the gravity of the plastic pollution crisis and calls for collective action to address it before irreparable harm is done to the Earth and its ecosystems.
