World Drug Day: Group visits school to sensitise students

Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) Nigeria have joined the whole world to celebrate the World Drug Day under the Support Don’t Punish Day of Action.

The group used the day to reach out to student by giving advocacy and sensitisation to the students on better drug policies in the country.

The programme which takes place at the Crescent University, Abeokuta had in attendance hundreds of students.

Speaking at the event, Mrs Ekwu Eucharia, a representative of the National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), who spoke on the criminal aspect of drugs gives an insight on the perception of the government about usage, trafficking, and cultivation of drugs in Nigeria.

Also speaking at the event, Barrister Habeeb Whyte, a legal practitioner in Ogun State who spoke about the right to legal representation on cases of drugs, and the need to separate traffickers from users, engage the participants in a charged discussion of analogous examples of drug use cases he has had to handle in the past left nobody indifferent on the need to change our approach.

Bashorun Olufemi, the SSDP Nigeria President spoke about the need to change the drug policies in Nigeria.

He mentioned that the drug policies of the nation do not fit its current reality.

Barrister Mujeeb Imram, a lecturer in the Bola Ajibola College of Law in the institution, who represented the Vice Chancellor of the university, explained the reasons behind the School’s decision to embark on the kind of approach it did to discourage the usage of drugs by students.

However, 37 students, along with 18 youths of the host community voluntarily decided to commence a reintegration program with the Neo-Psychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta.

The reintegration program will commence in the second week of July with a biweekly report to the school authority and SSDP Nigeria from the hospital

The event was however held in conjunction with Youthrise Nigeria, NYSC Drug free club and the Drug Harm Reduction Advocacy Networks Nigeria.
