The World Council of Churches (WCC) has condemned the killing of 16 persons in Omuku, Rivers State, on New Year day.
General Secretary of the WCC, Reverend (Dr) Olav Fykse Tveit, in a message published on the organisation’s website on Wednesday, also called for peace and justice and restated the importance of freedom of worship.
The statement read: “People who were worshipping, starting anew, celebrating and reflecting on a new year, have lost their lives. We condemn this senseless violence. Let us strengthen our resolution to pursue peace and justice for all, dignity for all, the freedom to worship safely for all.”
The WCC also called for prayers for the victims’ families.
“We mourn for the families of the victims, and for the church family that lost so much so quickly. God, we seek your mercy,” Tveit prayed.
