In commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week, a non-governmental organisation, Ibadan Mokola Heritage Lions Club, district 404B4 has partnered with the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan in creating awareness on the importance of breastfeeding.
The event which was held on Friday at the Abiola Ajimobi Child Welfare and Immunization Clinic, UCH, witnessed the distribution of gift items to nursing mothers in the hospital.
While gift items were distributed by the NGO to give support to nursing mothers, health talk was held by the UCH nurses who took the nursing mothers on the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding.
In an interview with journalists, the Region Chairman of Lions Club, Ibadan, Femi Phillips stated that the NGO partnered with the hospital in a bid to join the world in the advocacy of breastfeeding babies.
Phillips added that exclusive breastfeeding of babies for the first six months of their birth will go a long way in saving the infants from illness that attacks babies while growing up.
He stated that the club provided gift items to the beneficiaries to encourage breastfeeding among nursing mothers.
He reiterated the NGO’s commitment towards giving support to health initiatives through partnership with health institutions.
He further added that the organisation is ready to partner with UCH more on some health advocacy programs which are part of the Lions Club’s core global vision.
According to him, such initiatives include Child care, cancer awareness advocacy, diabetes advocacy, and provision of vision and care among others.
In his brief remarks, Chief Medical Director, UCH, Professor Jesse Otegbayo described the initiative by the club as a laudable one with the support of mothers.
Otegbayo, who was represented by the Deputy Chairman of Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC), Education and Training, Dr Kayode Iyun, said that it is important that charity organisations partner with health institutions to ensure that health-related programmes are promoted among the populace.
Also speaking at the event, Deputy Director of Nursing, UCH, Maryat Bello urged employers of labour to give nursing mothers the opportunity to breastfeed their children while working with them.
She urged husbands to encourage breastfeeding by giving support to their nursing wives.
She noted that ”breastfeeding is necessary if we want children to be nourished, if we want to sustain them and if we want them to thrive well so that we can have better people in our community in the future.“
One of the beneficiaries of the initiative, Aminat Rafiu appreciated the Lions Club for the gesture and she promised to continue to be an advocate of breastfeeding.
