Women have the right to aspire to higher to office ― Dickson

THE wife of the Bayelsa State Governor, Mrs Rachael Dickson has said that women has the right to aspire to higher office both in the public and private sector of the nation’s economy, if they could dream it and pursue their dreams to fruition.
This, the Governor Wife said while speaking with journalists shortly after the celebration of the 27the International Women’s Day with its theme “Be Bold for Change” at the Peace Park in Yenagoa.
Dickson challenged them to aspire to become doctors, nurses, entrepreneurs, engineers, lawyers, journalists, governor’s and president, adding the sky itself isn’t a limit to what God has destined them to be in life.
She therefore condemned all manner of abuse and assaults meted to women and the girl-child in the society, such as rape, molestation of widows, resigning the girl-child to kitchen, exposing girl-child to street hawking when they ought to be in schools to acquire knowledge
as leaders of tomorrow.
Dickson challenged mothers to speak out when their daughters are abused, particularly in the case of rape so that those that violated them should be made to face the full wrath of the law, and urged them to reject overtures from culprits to settle out of court.

The Governor’s Wife, alluded that mother are inexcusable not to educate their children, stressing that their usefulness hinge on their level of education in the life, submitting just like our grandmothers, not minding the economic downturn  all that is required is sacrifice.

She, however, lauded the Restoration Government in the state for giving women a sense of belongings, particularly for several appointments given to women in the state, and over 100 women benefitting from government empowerment programmes in the state.
Also, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Mathar Jenakumoh, who lauded Mrs Dickson over her award as the best governor’s wife in 2017, said that women are not weaklings in society because through trading and other vocation that have contributed to state and national development.

She pointed that politics without women is like a ship without radar, even as she thanked the governor for appointing women to position of trust to enable them add value to governance in that state.

The Chairperson of the National Council of Women Society (NCWS), Mrs Rebecca Suowari, and the chairperson of the federation of Women Lawyers, Miss Diseye Ogbise urged women to stop cohabiting and get married legally, and that women should get themselves educated to take advantage of laws protecting them in society.

Continuing, they mention the widows/child right law and called on the state assembly to domicile the Law on violence against persons prohibition act in the state, just as they stressed the need for the state assembly to strengthen laws that protect women and children
right.
In her remark, the Chairperson of the State Chapter of National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Mrs. Maria Olodi Osumah, regretted culture that made it difficult for women to speak in the past, the struggle women go through in the rural areas to make end meet, but noted society have evolved and through sound education and hard work women now occupy sensitive offices in the private sector, as well as active participation in politics.

She enjoined women not to leave their children without care, but to emulate our grandmothers who through hard work, determination and sacrifice were able to train their children, who now hold sensitive positions in society.

To this end, the Leader of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Mrs Boboye Ikiombe, charged women to jettison old traditions and embrace change, which according to her is pivotal to any meaningful development in society.

She, however, submitted that the union is doing its part to educate women and the girl-child to stay healthy, but fleeing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and the dreaded HIV/AIDS pandemic that could destroy their future ambition.
