Woman in court for allegedly stealing wig, lotion from supermarket

A 38-year-old woman, Uju Amaechi, who allegedly stole a human hair wig and body lotion on Wednesday appeared in a Yaba Chief magistrates’ court in Lagos.

The police charged Amaechi with theft.

The Prosecution Counsel, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye told the court that the defendant committed the offence between June and December 2019, at No. 7/9 Akerele str., Gbagada area of Lagos.

She said that the defendant in 2019, stole a human hair wig valued at N30,000 on June 8, a pack of soap valued at N5,000 on Nov. 30, and body lotion valued at 4,500 on Dec. 29 from De Prince supermarket.

Olaluwoye alleged that the defendant who stole the items in the company of her five-year-old son and was caught on the supermarket CCTV.

The offence, she said, contravened the provisions of Section 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three years imprisonment for the offence of theft.

Chief Magistrate Oluwatoyin Oghere admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

She ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with an evidence of three years’ tax payment to Lagos State Government.

Oghere adjourned the case until April 17, for mention.
