Woman, 40, arraigned, remanded over allegations of N300,000 theft

A 40-year-old woman, Wasiu Salewa, was arraigned on Friday before Magistrate R.A. Raji of the Chief Magistrates Court 11, sitting at Iwo Road, on a three-count charge bordering on stealing, conspiracy, and illegally receiving another person’s property.

The 40-year-old Salewa was arraigned with a charge sheet signed by ACP Folasade T. Daniel, Area Commander of the Agodi Area Command of the Police, which is delineated MNE/478c/2023.

According to the prosecutor, Wiwa Ola Oyegola, the defendant, and others at large conspired on October 18, 2023, to steal the sum of N300,000 belonging to Chief Abiola Ogundokun, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 516 of Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. 11, Laws of Oyo State, Nigeria 2000.

She was also alleged to have stolen at the same date and time N300,000 belonging to Chief Abiola Ogundokun through a transfer from an Access Bank account to a Blessed Telecoms Union account with the intent to convert the money to personal use, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 390 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. 11, Laws of Oyo State, Nigeria 2000.

She was further alleged to have received the sum of N300,000 with FCMB account number 7555542016, which was the property of Chief Abiola Ogundokun, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 427 of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. 11, Laws of Oyo State, Nigeria 2000.

Chief Ogundokun had informed the court that the money stolen ran into millions, and investigations are still ongoing to trace it.

The court had said that the charge may be updated by the next sitting when the police conclude their investigations.

She pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum, with the condition that one of the sureties must be a blood relative with valid means of identification and evidence of tax clearance.

The court said the second surety must be a business owner with not less than N500,000 in his account

The court further ordered that the addresses of the sureties must be verified by the investigating police officers.

The case was adjourned till January 15, 2024.
