Woman, 38 sentenced to 25 years in prison over N4.5m theft in Osun

An Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo, on Wednesday sentenced a 38-year-old woman, identified as Toyin Raheem to 25 years in prison for stealing N4.5 million.

The state prosecutor, Mr Abiodun Badiora informed the court that the convict committed the offence on June 1st, 2018 at about 8:00 am.

He explained that the convict was a staff of MTN Outlet owned by Wolid Investment Limited (MTN Partner), Osogbo.

Badiora said the convict stole the sum of N4.5 million kept at her disposal and also attempted to set the business outlet ablaze.

He said that the convict’s intention was to deceive the owner of the business that the money got burnt in the building before the fire was quenched.

According to the charge sheet, the offence was contrary to sections 443(A), 390(9),1(1)(A) and punishable under section 1(3) of the Advance Free Fraud of Related Offenses Act 2006 and the Criminal Code CAP 34 Vol. 11, laws of Osun, 2003.

Counsel to the convict, Mr Abdulfatai Abdulsalam, urged the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing his client, pleading that the convict is a first offender and had learnt her lesson.

The presiding judge, Justice Yinka Aderibigbe said the prosecution had proved his case beyond reasonable doubt and subsequently sentenced Toyin to 25 years imprisonment.
