Nigerian singer Olawale Ibrahim Ashimi, popularly known as Brymo, has stated that it is disrespectful to the legendary music artist Fela Anikulapo, that new generation artistes like Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy are inventing new styles within the Afrobeat genre that he pioneered.
Brymo disclosed this while appearing as a guest in an interview with an on-air personality on TVC.
According to him, it is disrespectful to the late legendary music artist and pioneer of Afrobeat, Fela Anikulapo, that new generation artistes are trying to invent new styles in the music genre he labored so much to bring to existence.
He said, “I saw a video where he (Burna boy) said he was the Jesus of Afrobeat and he put Davido and Wizkid on some other mountain like that.
“I think he is sleazy, he is cheap, he is a thief, very unoriginal, very fake. Every song is a sample or a stolen slogan. Who does that?
“Afrobeat is a music style, not a genre. Fela started the genre and it is disrespectful that a new generation of musicians came and just added ‘S’ to create another center of number one.
“Wizkid is the first, Davido, Burna Boy, no no no they are all thieves. Do you know how much struggle Baba (Fela) went through to create Afrobeat? Anyway, I think it is a whole problem we have, even in black American music cycles. Hip-hop was called hip-hop in the 80s, then it became rap, then it became trap.
“We just showed up and tried to rename what our older brothers did. There is supposed to be continuity.”
