Will the average Nigerian youth be okay?

A Nigerian female artiste, Teni the entertainer, said in one of her hit songs, Case, stated that “my papa no be Dangote or Adeleke but we go dey okay,” this means even though our father is neither Dangote or Adeleke, we will still be okay. Is she really saying the truth?

Are the children of poor people in this country really going to be okay? The only people making it in this country are people with wealthy background or those that their parents hold important positions in the society.

Rich parents have secured the future of their children, created a path for their children to follow and connect them with the decision makers of this country.

In my nursery and primary education, we were told that education is the best legacy but in the youthful age we discovered that “who you know” must accompany education.

We have best brains with excellent grades in the university roaming the street and wasting their potentials because the system works on favouritism and nepotism.

Recently, a federal lawmaker and pension ad hoc committee chairman’s daughter, Deborah Ighiwiyisi Agbonayinma working with National Pension Commission (PenCom) was caught using a fake foreign and local university degree. There are many qualified youths out on the street that will do the work perfectly but she used the position of her father to gain undeserved advantage.

As an average Nigerian youth, it is extremely difficult to live and compete with the “rich man pikin” because they are way ahead before the race begins.

The wealth of this nation is circulating among very few people known as cabals, who also are installing their children in the circle. Nigerian youths are the largest population in the country and most of them live in poverty not because they are lazy or not qualified to make decisions, but because they don’t know the higher people on the food chain.

In Teni’s lyrics, we are not okay presently but we are going to be okay? What else can the youth do than to hope they will be okay?
