The governor spoke a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakaudu, was quoted as saying that the APC Federal Government resolved to implement the plot during her last security meeting.
He further alleged that the intelligence came from credible sources that were privy to the ugly plot against Rivers State.
The governor called on the international community to take note of the proposed illegal action of the APC Federal Government, which is aimed at creating a crisis in the state.
He regretted that the APC Federal Government has continued to work deliberately to compromise the security of Rivers State.
Wike urged the people of the state to remain calm, but vigilant adding that the evil machinations of the APC Federal Government will not distract the state from delivering on her constitutional responsibilities to Rivers people.
The governor’s allegations are coming at a time tension is already rising in the state following serious issues of insecurity across the state believed to be a dress rehearsal for the 2019 elections and with the two leading parties in the state blaming each other for the incidences in which lives have been lost.
And in an attempt to ensure that the 2019 elections were devoid of the violent postures Rivers State has come to be associated with, stakeholders were already brainstorming at various fora in the state with the aim to change the ugly narratives.
For example early in the week, Ledum Mitee, Coordinator, Initiative For Credible Elections ICE, speaking at the opening ceremony of the Correspondents’ Week of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the NUJ, Rivers State charged the media to highlight speeches, activities and actions of “politicians and other institutions like the security agencies that are capable of threatening the security of the 2019 elections.”
Speaking on the topic ” Promoting Security in 2019 Elections: The Role of the Media,” the former President of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), Mitee charged; “In playing the media’s most obvious role of reporting news and information to the general public in order to make educated political choices, the media, therefore, must do a thorough and impartial job when informing the public on all political events, especially those pertaining to violence.”
He stressed; “There is no doubt that elections pose a special challenge for the media in this area. The media must strive to remain partisan politically neutral and objective in order to properly educate the public. Media coverage should be unbiased rather than favouring any one candidate or point of view in order for the voters to make informed decisions.”
