Why we won Carnival Calabar for second time — Calasvegas Band leader

The leader of the winning Calasvegas Band at the recently held Carnival Calabar 2024, High Chief Edem Duke attributed the band’s success to the unwavering dedication of its members and their creative skills in interpreting the carnival theme.

Duke, a former Minister of Culture and Tourism, shared these insights during a press session following a celebratory gathering at the old Mirage Hotel in Calabar.

He emphasised that the key to the band’s continued success over the past two years lies in their commitment to excellence and the ability of the performers to showcase their talents.

“There is no secret to our achievement other than our dedication to tapping into our creative potential and effectively utilizing our team members,” he stated.

Duke elaborated on the philosophy of Calasvegas Band, noting that while it operates like any other band, its leadership by a renowned African performer with extensive experience in communication and marketing sets it apart.

“This unique guidance, combined with the eagerness of the younger members to learn and understand the season’s spirit, contributed to their standout performance this year.

He stated that maintaining the carnival spirit is essential, highlighting that winning is merely a bonus. “We intend to sustain our collaborative efforts, performance intensity, and creativity,” he affirmed.

To ensure ongoing success, Duke revealed plans for the Calasvegas Band to expand its reach into central and Cross River North Senatorial districts for talent acquisition. He also advocated for early planning, broader stakeholder involvement, and improved marketing strategies to maintain the carnival’s momentum.

The victory party was attended by notable figures, including Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, the leader of the Seagull Band; Commissioner for Tourism Abubakar Ewa; Hon. Stanley Nsemo from the State House of Assembly; and Austin Cobham, Executive Secretary of the Carnival Commission.
