Why we ventured into wine, spirits market —NB Plc

The management of Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc says the decision of the company to go into wine and spirits market, by the acquisition of Distell Wine and Spirits, is to explore new opportunities in the nation’s alcoholic space, and prepare the company for the future.

Speaking at the company’s pre-Annual General Meeting, held in Lagos, recently, the Company Secretary and Legal Director, NB Plc, Uaboi Agbebaku stated that the recent acquisition of the 80 percent stake in Distell, by NB PLC, demonstrates its strong belief  in the nation’s business environment.

He described the decision of the company to shut down two of its plants as part of its strategies at effectively weathering the present economic storm in the country, and positioning it for the future.

Agbebaku however assured the affected staff and the communities where the plants are sited, of the company’s continued support.

“Though we are shutting down these plants temporarily, let me assure the communities where these plants are sited that they will continue to enjoy our support. Plans are also underway to redistribute workers in those plants to our other plants, and properly disengage those that can not fit into the plans,” he stated.

Speaking on the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the Corporate Affairs  Director, Mrs. Sade Morgan, stated that the company, had, over the decades, built a culture of giving back to its operating environments.

One of such initiative, she stated, is the annual Maltina Teacher of The Year (MToY) Award,  aimed at celebrating excellence among Nigerian secondary school teachers, and on which the company has so far spent a total of N1.5billion since its inception some years ago.

The company’s Managing Director, Mr.  Hans Essaadi, stated that despite the  nation’s tough business terrain, the company’s confidence in the environment remains unshaken.

“We’ve been around for decades, and we remain confident in this economy; hence our continued investments in Nigeria,” he added.
