Why we approved revised National Building Code ―FG

THE Federal Government( FG) said the revised National Building Code has been approved to address housing deficit, reduce cases of building collapse and help achieve the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to reducing climate change.

This is also as it inaugurated Muyiwa Ige, son of late Attorney General of the Federation Bola Ige, and 44 others into the board of the Architects Registration Council (ARCON).

Speaking at the inauguration yesterday in Abuja, the Minister of Power Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola the code was eventually passed after much consultations with the state Commissioners for housing and other relevant stakeholders.

“I’m glad to inform you that we have passed the revised national building code in order to help the built industry,” he said.

While urging the reconstituted Council to help fulfil the President’s mandate part of which include addressing housing deficits, building collapse challenges in the country and maintaining professionalism in the sector.

According to him, the council is expected to determine the standard of education and experience necessary to be a practising architect in the country.

“I want you to consider your appointment as a call to national service especially as a participation or contribution of your quota towards helping President Buhari build Nigeria.

“We, therefore, urge you to ensure buildings are utilised, constructed and designed in such a way that public health and safety are not compromised,” he said.
