I am hoping that a time will come in Nigeria when Nigeria’s ‘first corps member’ in person of the Director General, Sule Zakari Kazaure, will include tour in the three-week orientation camp for corps members.
What is tour?
Tour is a guided visit to a particular place. Tourism is the act where people move from their geographical area to another area; not for the purpose of being paid ,but for recreation, relaxation, etc.
Tourism should be included in the three weeks orientation for corps members because it is part of education. It will increase the knowledge of the corps members about the state they are posted for service. Most corps members have not been to the state they are posted to before, which means that they don’t know or have little knowledge about the state.
So travelling within that state will add to their knowledge. The corps members should not be limited within the camp for all the three weeks.
As we know that part of the vision and mission of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is for corps members to know about another culture apart from their own culture. If tour is included in the three weeks orientation in camp, tourism will help corps members to learn quickly part of the culture of the state they are posted.
Talking about the ‘culture’ Culture is the way of life of people in a particular society or area. Tourism will help corps members to know how the people in that town live their life (like their mode of dressing, feeding, language, etc). Corps members won’t be able to know people in that town if they are within a particular area for weeks, although they won’t know everything about their culture in a day tour but it would serve as an eye opener.
When corps members are taken on a tour around or within the town, they will meet people of that town that would tell them some things about their town that it is not obvious to people, unless they are told. For example, a lady was posted to a state in Nigeria for her youth service and after the three weeks orientation camp, she traveled home and when she travelled back to the place she was posted and she found out their dressing was totally different from her own. She told herself: ‘if I had known that this is how they dress here, I would have prepared myself before going by getting new dresses like theirs’ .
I believe if she had been out of the camp she would have known or seen or someone would have informed her about their mode of dressing.
Also, tourism is helpful cause it helps to know the dos and don’ts of the town. It could be very dangerous if someone is ignorant of some things. If corps members are taken on a tour during that tour they will know the “dos and don’ts” of that town which would not let them to be ignorant. It is needful because some corps members will be posted to places they are not familiar with and they don’t know about their taboos.
Tourism helps corps members to know about the history of the state they are posted to. If corps members are taken to museum they will know a lot about historical value of the state.
Tourism also helps in relaxation. It is no news that the three weeks orientation is always stressful. When corps members are taken on tour to tourism sites that will help them to relax and it will help them to regain their strength.
Tourism is also a means of entertainment. Rumour has it that some corps members sneak out of camp because of boredom, but if tourism is included, I believe there would be no need for corps members to sneak out of camp since there would be an opportunity for them to get out of camp.
If corps members would be taken out for tour, they should be divided into different groups and also different days so that there will be orderliness.
