Why South Korea’s president declared emergency martial law

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, in a televised address on Tuesday, declared emergency martial law in the country.

The president justified the move, which temporarily places the nation under military rule, as essential for safeguarding South Korea’s constitutional order.

He cited concerns about the opposition’s influence over parliament and alleged ties to North Korea as the primary reasons for the declaration.

Speaking in the televised address, he said, “I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the despicable pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people, and to protect the free constitutional order.”

The declaration has sparked political and public uncertainty, and it is unclear how it will impact South Korea’s governance and democracy.

According to Reuters, local media outlet YTN reported that the opposition Democratic Party, led by Lee Jae-myung, plans to “nullify” the president’s decision.

Meanwhile, Han Dong-hoon, leader of the ruling People Power Party, criticised the martial law as “wrong” and pledged to oppose it.

Since assuming office in 2022, Yoon has faced significant challenges in advancing his agenda, largely due to an opposition-dominated parliament.

The ongoing standoff between the conservative People Power Party and the liberal Democratic Party has stalled progress on critical issues, including next year’s budget.

Yoon’s administration has also been mired in controversy, with opposition leaders calling for independent investigations into alleged misconduct involving his wife and senior officials.

While martial law is generally enacted during wartime or national emergencies, its implementation often suspends civil rights and imposes military control.

Though usually temporary, such measures can be extended indefinitely, depending on the circumstances.
