THE Shippers Association of Lagos State (SALS) has said that the controversial leadership style of its former President, Leo Ogamba led to his impeachment and the takeover of the association in substantive capacity as President by the former Vice President, Princess Mulikat Sanni.
Addressing maritime journalists recently in Lagos, the spokesman of SALS, Prince Ike Nwagbo, urged the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) not to meddle in the internal affairs of the association.
According to Prince Nwagbo, “The claim by Evang. Leo Ogamba that he was impeached because he signed an cut of court settlement documents on behalf of SALS as a sitting President is baseless because signing the out of Court settlement agreement does not confer any special night on him as an individual to appropriate any money to himself.
“So, his claim lacks substance as the signing cannot rail-road the money into his personal account because the money is Shippers’ money. His signing of the out of Court settlement agreement was only opportunistic because he was not a member of SALS when the case was initiated and up to the later stage at the Supreme Court.
“The Nigeria Shippers’ Council insistence that Evangelist Leo Ogamba as the sitting President at the material time should sign the out of Court settlement agreement was an administrative aberration as SALS had earlier presented a BOT member, Rev. NichodermusOdolo to sign the out of Court Settlement agreement, since the Registered Trustees of SALS was party to the case.
“We only allowed the action of the Nigerian Shippers Council for peace to reign in the Association and not to jeopardise the already agreed out of Court settlement with the Terminal Operator, APM Terminals Limited. Apapa.
“The meeting at which the impeachment by unanimous Vote of No Confidence of Evangelist Leo Ogamba took place was a general meeting of SALS, duly published, in the usual channel, the Association’s WhatsApp platform, where Evangelist Leo Ogamba is an active participant
“Nigeria Shippers Council has no right to interfere in the internal affairs of SALS as a registered association, therefore, the statement by Evangelist Leo Ogamba that SALS should have waited for the intervention of Nigerian Shippers Council holds no water.
“After Leo Ogamba’s impeachment, the former Vice President, Princess Mulikat Sanni was appointed substantive President because our constitution does not recognize an acting President. The constitution does not say somebody should take over in acting capacity if a President is impeached.”
