Why FUOYE has not changed name to General Adeyinka Adebayo University

Published by

THE Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) has explained the delay in renaming the university after the military governor of the defunct Western Region, General Adeyinka Adebayo, about one year after the pronouncement by the Federal Government.

The Vice-Chancellor of FUOYE, Professor Kayode Soremekun, who spoke through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Fashina, explained that the delay in adopting the new name was as a result of the unfinished bureaucratic formalities by the government.

He said the National Assembly had to approve the name, saying “it is not our making that the name isn’t in use yet, we are waiting for the civil service processes to be completed. We have written letters and we are hoping that they would take action soon.”

The Federal Government had announced, through Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on May 20, 2017, at the burial of General Adebayo that the university would be named after him as one of the ways of immortalising the late general.

Earlier, Professor Soremekun had administered the oath of matriculation on 5,483 new students of the university in its seven faculties.

The Vice-Chancellor had charged the students against vices and urged them to make the best of their stay in FUOYE.
