Why do I have fissured tongue?

Fissured tongue is when there are multiple small furrows or grooves on the surface of the tongue. In most cases, this harmless tongue condition is just a variation of a tongue’s appearance; one can be born with a fissured tongue or it can develop over time. And, except there are other symptoms, you don’t need to treat a fissured tongue but you will need to brush well to clear any buildup from the cracks.

The fissures can be shallow or deep, single or multiple but often there is a prominent fissure in the center of the tongue. As people age, this condition is found more commonly and the severity also increases.

The most prominent symptom of fissured tongue is changes to the appearance of the tongue and most people don’t have any additional symptoms. Fissured tongue often occurs along with geographic tongue, another harmless tongue condition that causes flat, discolored patches on the tongue.

Medicalexperts cants say what causes fissured tongue; they believe it’s likely just a variation in the way that tongues can look. Most often, fissured tongue happens in healthy people and it can develop seemingly out of nowhere as you get older.

It is believed that the genes impact whether you develop a fissured tongue but it has been said that underlying health conditions, including high blood pressure (hypertension) and diabetes could contribute to fissured tongue though the exact connection is not yet clear.

Fissured tongue is more common in people with certain genetic conditions;down’s syndrome, Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome, Coffin-Lowry syndrome, Pierre Robin syndrome and Sjögren’s syndrome.

Fissured tongue doesn’t usually require a diagnosis or treatment since it’s considered a variation of the tongue’s appearance. However, if you experience additional symptoms like a burning sensation on your tongue, bad breath, or trouble eating or swallowing, you should see a healthcare provider.

Since tongue fissures are normal and harmless, there is no need to correct the grooves in your tongue. However, if you have fissures in your tongue you may need to pay extra attention to oral hygiene. Food particles or debris can get stuck in the fissures, leading to bad breath, plaque buildup, and other oral health concerns. Brushing your tongue thoroughly can help keep your mouth and tongue healthy

Characteristics of fissured tongue include cracks, grooves, or clefts appear on the top and sides of the tongue; fissures only affect your tongue, fissures on the tongue vary in depth but they may be as deep as 6 millimeters,grooves may connect with other grooves, separating the tongue into small lobes or sections and unless debris builds up in these fissures, you are unlikely to have any symptoms.

Fissures may first appear during childhood. However, fissures are more common in adults. And, just as wrinkles can deepen with age, fissures can also become more pronounced as you get older.

If a fissured tongue causes any symptoms, your dentist may encourage you to brush your tongue. This may help remove debris that has built up in deep fissures, causing irritation.
