Why Canada will never be part of the US — Justin Trudeau

Embattled Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has categorically dismissed the notion of a United States-Canada merger, describing it as entirely out of the question.

Trudeau, who recently announced his planned resignation as Canada’s prime minister, made this assertion in a post on X on Tuesday.

According to him, both nations thrive as strong partners, particularly in trade and security, benefiting workers and communities on both sides. As such, there is no need for any merger.

He tweeted, “There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States.

“Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s biggest trading and security partner.

Trudeau’s statement follows U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s revival of his controversial proposal for a merger between the two nations.

Tribune Online reports that Trump, in a social media post on Monday, argued that such an arrangement would eliminate tariffs, lower taxes, and bolster Canada’s security against perceived threats from Russia and China. 

He further claimed that merging the two countries would create unparalleled economic and security advantages.

“If Canada merged with the US, there would be no tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be totally secure from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships that are constantly surrounding them,” Trump posted.

“Together, what a great nation it would be!!!” he added.
