From January till today, numerous weddings involving prominent personalities across the country have captured public attention. These beautiful ceremonies are held in stunning locations, with couples adorned in exquisite wedding attire. It’s time to consider our very own designer wedding fabric, aṣọ òkè.
Aso-Oke, pronounced Ah-SHAW-Okay, is a handwoven cloth that originated from the Yoruba people. The town of Iseyin in Oyo State is widely believed to be the birthplace of Aso Oke. The cloth, made from cotton is used to make a variety of garments including agbada (men’s gowns), fila (hat), iro (wrapper), buba (women’s blouse), or komole (men’s gowns).
Couples wear aṣọ ebi on their big day, as it comes in different colors and textures. They choose the colour and style that suit the wedding’s theme and their family’s preference. Friends and extended family also wear aṣọ ebi, a uniform family clothing material, that symbolises unity.
The tradition of wearing aṣọ ebi at weddings has endured over the years. It has evolved with modern designs and now holds a place on the international fashion scene.
The beauty of the fabric has captivated many admirers.
However, aṣọ òkè serves as a marker of Yoruba identity. It is aesthetically appealing, associated with wealth, respect, and status, and conveys joy and celebration.
Aso Oke stands out as it comes in different colours and looks elegant and ethereal when used by the bride and groom at weddings
More than just fabric, aṣọ òkè represents respect, unity and an appreciation of tradition. I suggest wearing aṣọ òkè to make your wedding celebration truly colourful and unforgettable.
