Why Africa must explore mineral resources for infrastructural growth, economic prosperity —Salami

President/CEO of MinePro and Energy Ltd, Dr Femi Salami, has called for a concerted effort towards the proper and full exploration of Africa’s mineral resources for accelerated development.

He disclosed that the aim for such exploration shouldn’t only be focused on infrastructural growth, but also towards a broader economic prosperity.

He stated this during the Atlantic Council Roundtable on critical minerals for energy transition, with a specific focus on the potential of African and Asian resources. The event was held on the sidelines of the All Exclusive African Mineral Strategy Group (AMSG) 2024 meeting.

While noting that a significant share of critical minerals are present in Africa, he called for strong leadership and genuine political will to harness the sector’s potential for accelerated development.

“We need to leverage these resources not only for infrastructural growth but also for the broader economic prosperity of our region.

“Today’s critical resources may not have the same importance in the future. Therefore, we must act decisively and wisely,” he said.

Salami was part of the Nigerian delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima that attended the recently held AMSG meeting in the United States as part of the 2024 United Nations General Assembly.

At the AMSG meeting headed by the Secretary-General, Moses Engadu, Salami joined Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, and other stakeholders from member states to discuss mineral resource management within member states.

During the meeting, Dr Salami harped on the critical role that unity plays among nations in addressing challenges in mineral resource development that Africa faces.

Member countries also reaffirmed their commitment to a united front in the management of natural resources and reiterated aims to prioritise value addition within the region to bolster the overall economy of its member states.

The AMSG, comprising 16 African countries, helps to facilitate international cooperation in the minerals and mining sector among members to harness the potential of Africa’s vast mineral reserves for mutual benefit.
