WHO, two others collaborate to tackle neglected tropical diseases

Published by

World Health Organisation (WHO), ZERO NOMA Initiative, and the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology (FCAH&PT), Ibadan, recently collaborated to put together an awareness campaign targeted at tackling Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).

The target audience for the awareness campaign were students and staff of the Departments of Veterinary Laboratory Technology and Animal Health Technology of the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology (FCAH&PT), Moor Plantation, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a diverse group of tropical infections that are common in low-income populations in developing regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

They are caused by a variety of pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and parasitic worms (helminths). These diseases are contrasted with the “big three” infectious diseases (HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria), which generally receive greater treatment and research funding.

Speaking during the event held on the school premises, Team Lead for ZERO NOMA Initiative, Dr Ifeoluwa Adetula, said: “NOMA is a Neglected Tropical Disease and today being World NTD Day, we decided to create awareness, talk to students, and let them see themselves as advocates that can create awareness about NTDs, that is why we are here.”

Also speaking Head of the Department of Veterinary Laboratory Technology, FCAH&PT Ibadan, Dr. Onyeka Nwufoh, said: “We have a goal that by 2030, we would have eliminated Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).

“It has been designed in such a way that every January 30th, there should be an awareness, we should talk about it, we should let people be aware that there are diseases like this and that should be spoken about, that attention should be paid to and that should be eliminated.”

Head of the Department of Animal Health Technology, Dr. Ifeoluwapo Akanbi, also gave a brief presentation on rabies, a neglected zoonosis.
