Who is to blame for military takeover in Niger?

Published by

The military in Niger Republic have staged a coup overthrowing President Muhammed Bazoum. World leaders have strongly condemned the military intervention in Niger. The military officers that took over power have said that incessant killings of Niger citizens prompted them to take over power.

The citizens of Niger who were supposed to condemn the military intervention were, however, jubilating to welcome the military intervention. I kept wondering what the politicians of Niger Republic must have done to cause their citizens to ventilate their grievances against them by turning out en masse to stone politicians who attempted to escape from the country.

The international community is watching the Niger Republic now. The African Union has issued a strong warning to the military to rescind the decision by handing over power to President Bazoum within 15 days. The question to be asked is this: who is to blame for the military takeover in Niger? I can say confidently that it is Niger politicians that are not doing the needful.

Niger citizens have expressed their displeasure towards their politicians and welcomed the military to govern them. If we take a look at how some elected African presidents govern, we will discover that things are not going well for their citizens. Life has become unbearable for many African citizens simply because of being governed by bad leaders. Let’s learn from Niger Republic coup.

Let me use this medium to call on the African Union leaders to embrace dialogue and not use force to restore President Bazoum into power.
