Yemisi motherYemisi motherDear Yemisi,

I am a 31-year –old lady. I am from Kwara State. I live and work in the state.

Since I have been born, I have never had the opportunity of meeting, talk less of seeing my mother live and direct.

I have been asking my father who actually my mother is, but as of the time of writing this letter to you, he has refused to tell me who my mother is.

My paternal grandmother took me up as early as four months and I lived with her till I got married after having my Ordinary Level certificate as my father was not forthcoming on sponsoring my further education.

From the information at my disposal, I learned my father and mum were childhood friends and they later started dating each other. She told me that my mother was from Anambra State, but born and bred at Mushin area of Lagos. According to my granny, the idea of my dad and mummy coming together as husband and wife were opposed because of her state of origin.

My daddy once told his mother that my mummy came around in 1998 to check on me but he told her that he does not know my whereabouts. As of then, I was with his mother as he lied. I keep asking both my dad and his mother even till last month, but the duo keeps telling me tales.

Consequent upon this objection to their getting married, he has since gotten married to another woman and they are blessed with children while he has abandoned me. My mother as I learned has equally remarried.

The little education I have was by the sole effort of my granny who took it upon herself to give me both elementary and secondary school education.

My father is a military officer and he is based in Lagos.

I have been pestering my daddy now for years that he should please locate my mother or better give me where I can locate her family members. He once volunteered that my mummy’s relatives were based somewhere in Alagbado area of Lagos State. After waiting for years for him to show me, my mum, I decided to get married after a nine-year courtship to a God-fearing man. My marriage has been blessed with a girl.

I have incurred his hatred because of my calling him to want to know my mother. As things are now, he no longer picks my several calls because he said that my calls were disturbing his peace. I don’t think I deserve this treatment from him if he is actually my father. After all, from the available information at my disposal, my mother was not to be blamed for their not getting married to each other in the first instance.

Where in Alagbado do I go now to start to trace my mother? Why should I be made a scapegoat for the offense I knew nothing about? I want to believe my mother is still alive. I keep wondering what could have warranted my daddy’s keeping me in the dark over. Do I not deserve to know my mother?

I learned my mum’s name then was Edith Oniga, I don’t know what name she answers now.

Please, I need your readers’ urgent intervention.

Kemi Lateefat,

Kwara State.
