When Globacom unveiled future road map for telecoms development in Nigeria

Globacom, the total telecommunications services provider, recently announced its developmental plans for the telecommunications industry in Nigeria at an event in at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos,recently. The event, typical of the telco, was a grand one, laced with fanfare the network operator is known for.

Apart from the sizzling slideshows detailing the roadmap, there was rib cracking jokes from Godwin Komone (Gordons) and supported by Seyi Law, another sensational comedian who added spice to the event, which showcased the endorsement of Globacom by World Heavyweight champion in Nigerian-born Anthony Joshua, who hailed Glo in the slideshow.

Ever since inception in 2003, Globacom has never hidden its desire to be the leader in the sector and truly, it has broken and initiated products and services that have helped grown the sector in no small way. With the conquest of many firsts and the recent feat in 4G evolutions, the next step was the plans to continue to be the leader and these were the reasons for the interaction with newsmen and other stakeholders at the recent event.

Without doubt, Globacom has proved that it is the driver of Nigeria’s digital future. Confirming its position as the leader in innovation in the Nigerian telecoms market, Globacom at the event unveiled seven unique products meant to position Nigeria to tap into the benefits of the global digital revolution. The products were announced alongside the endorsement by Nigerian-born World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Anthony Oluwafemi Joshua and another first of its kind in the industry.

The operator said its roadmap to drive the future of Nigeria’s telecommunication sector includes a plan tGlobaco introduce new data analytics tools to capture subscriber experience in real time.

According to Sanjib Roy, Globacom’s Group Technical Director, the company has undertaken extensive investment in network upgrades, including swapping of legacy facilities. He said the company is poised to have its best year ever in terms of quality of service, data speed and capacity expansion. He disclosed that the last 10 months have witnessed the landing of about 26 freight aircraft from around the world, bringing tons of network equipment into the country for Globacom.

The seven new products and services, as announced by the company Group Technical Director, Roy, which will be released in batches in the coming days and weeks includes, Glo Drive, Glo Health, Glo Entertainment Portal, Glo Mobile Money, Glo Call Connect Service, World Connect and  Glo Titi, the Artificial Intelligence platform.

 

Major highlights of the products

Glo Health Care is a digital health assistant designed to help Nigerians access best global health care directly on their phones.

Subscribers can connecting 300 specialised doctors worldwide and get information on common medical conditions at the click of a button. It also provides access to information on common health challenges and health advice on public health, all available in audio translation in Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba.

Glo Entertainment Portal is designed as a single point of access for all digital content through Glo Café which supplies premium content of top international labels.

It offers access to over two million local and foreign songs now available on Glo Café and over 12,000 Hollywood, Nollywood, Bollywood movies on Glo movie café among many others.

Glo Titi is an Artificial Intelligence Service that completely changes customer experience. Glo Artificial Intelligence platform will engage customers directly and assist them to get information about data plans, prepaid plans and Value Added Services (VAS). This enables customers to choose the most convenient plan, resolve issues and ask questions 24/7 without any human interface. It is highly interactive and engaging, as it helps subscribers with Information about data plans, prepaid plans, postpaid plans, VAS, balance enquiry & customer care assistance. The service, it was said, will be available on voice and text conversations in English and Pidgin-English to assist subscribers

The Glo Mobile Money, according to Roy, is an agent network, which will hasten the drive towards a cash-light Nigerian society by enabling  financial transactions on the mobile phone and extending financial inclusion to over 60 million unbanked people in the country.

A network for quick mobilisation of funds for utility payments, involving safe and secure transfers to reduce physical cash management and with instant transfers with 24×7 availability. The cache in this product is that no high-end device is required, and there is no data dependency (Can work with any phone).

Glo Drive addresses problems subscribers face with storing data by offering limitless storage capacity in the cloud. Access from any devices to import from ones FB, Instagram, Twitter, Dropbox or Gmail account instantly, while allowing family sharing of all memories and experiences.

Glo call Connect Services allows subscribers with zero balance to notify subscribers through SMS notification and customer will be notified upon return to the network from switched off mode or when out of coverage. It helps subscribers to stay connected always in case of low balance, out of coverage or phone switch-off

World Connect is the most affordable roaming data and anywhere in the world as it allows one to stay connected to the office anywhere one is in the world, just as the coverage is across top countries of the world.

 

Anthony Joshua on Glo

In the slideshow, World heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Oluwafemi Joshua, endorsed Globacom, citing its reach and speed, as he described the network as his reliable partner.

“I respect the ownership and management of Globacom and as a Nigerian, I believe charity must begin from home. “I believe in Glo.

“We have the fastest speed, longest reach and the Nigerian fighting spirit as game changers. Glo, I hail o!,” Joshua stated.

It was disclosed that Globacom’s endorsement contract with Joshua covers Nigeria and Ghana.

A new commercial was also unveiled to the audience. It features King Sunny Ade (KSA), Davido, Olamide, Flavour and Sani Danja. Again, top Nigerian musicians and actors feature in Glo’s ‘We Got People Talking’ song.

 

Network Upgrade

Roy also used the opportunity to touch on some of the activities the operator has done on its infrastrure and equipment aimed at matching the new products and services that are in place and those in the pipeline for the height the company is targeting.

“A new e-band microwave radio technology has been deployed, resulting in increase in backhaul bandwidth to 1.5-2gb per link. More than 1800 BTS and equal number of NodeBs have been swapped in Lagos, Oyo, Ogun and Rivers states. Also supplied and deployed are 1000 microwaves to modernise the transmission network to IP. The capacity of Glo 1, Globacom’s submarine cable, has been upgraded to 300G, giving huge bandwidth for mobile and enterprise business.“

Roy said deployment of high wattage Radio Remote Units (RRU) for 3G services and multi-sector antenna had been concluded  for better 3G indoor coverage, high speed data download, signal quality and network coverage, among so many others.

Roy disclosed that, in 2019, Globacom is planning for a bigger and better future.
