Dealing with inappropriate interview questions would begin with you being able to identify them when you are asked such questions. How, then do you approach them?
In an interview, the interviewer is meant to ask questions that help them to get to know you better with regard to the role that you are applying for.
Inappropriate interview questions that you could be asked in an interview could be – being asked questions that are irrelevant and not applicable to the role that you’re applying for. You could also be asked highly sensitive and personal questions by the interviewer that require you to share parts of yourself that you are not comfortable with.
To deal with this situation, let’s take a look at how you can approach such questions:
When you are faced with inappropriate interview questions, the first thing you want to make sure of, is that you’re calm and you don’t lose composure.
Subtle ways you can imbibe to maintain composure are smile to release tension, taking deep breaths within seconds, and being patient. Another way to do this is to pay attention to the question asked and do well to respectfully communicate your displeasure.
While trying to keep calm and keep your composure intact, you’ll need to confidently communicate to the interviewers your thoughts and response to the issue on the ground.
Another way to deal with inappropriate interview questions is to eliminate undue pressure that could subject you to intimidation. Remember that the interviewer chose to ask you questions like that and it’s no fault of yours.
This requires skill and an element of subtleness. You can send a simple message to the interviewer by letting him or her know that you’re uncomfortable with that question.
Other times, you can outrightly inform them that you don’t feel comfortable answering those questions. You might get lucky, and you might not.
When it happens that you’re asked inappropriate interview questions, and you’ve communicated your displeasure and irritability. Yet, the interviewer is standing on business, you can excuse yourself from the interview.
Bear in mind that you don’t have to allow yourself to condone such an act.
Above all, keep an open and alert mind so you don’t fall prey to such questions before you realise it.
