What we want from FG —Urhobo

Urhobo worldwide, under the aegis of Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), have reeled out their agenda the Federal Government  is expected to attend to.

The agenda followed the belief of the nationality that in spite of the current challenges confronting the country, a new dawn would emerge in the end.

As a result, President-General of UPU, Olorogun Moses Ighenerume Taiga, addressing a world press conference  recently to herald the 90th anniversary of the union, disclosed that a think-tank is already drafting an Urhobo agenda through which the nationality will engage all Urhobo, Nigeria and the world.

He described the agenda as a product of a prudent and dispassionate evaluation of the present predicament of Nigeria from which a blueprint would emerge with which to engage the stakeholders.

Taiga, who was flanked by members of his cabinet, at the Urhobo Cultural Centre, Uvwiamuge-Agbarho, Delta North Local Government Area of the state, stated that the Urhobo would demand no less than N1 trillion from the Federal Government and oil multinationals for years of plundering and degradation of Urhobo land through oil exploration and exploitation.

“In line with this, we demand an environmental remediation programme for communities that were negatively impacted by oil exploration such as Erhoike, Erhobaro-Orogun, Imodje-Orogun, Afiesere, Evwreni, Erhuemukohwarien and others,” he asserted.

Other items on the agenda, according to the President-General, include reclamation of Urhobo language from extinction, redirection of interest in agriculture, industrialisation, builfing of seaports, reactivation of moribund Delta Steel Company, Africa Timber and Plywood, Sapele and curbing insecurity in communities.

Other agenda, he added, are peaceful coexistence with neighbours in Warri, emergence of governor from the nationality come 2023, non-support for secessionists agitation, and the call for the restructuring of Nigeria in line with fiscal federalism.

To drive a revolution in Small and Medium Scale Enterprise (SMEs) in Urhoboland,  Delta State, Chief Taiga disclosed that a microfinance bank, Okugbe MicroFinance Bank, which is being considered by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), will soon come on board.
