Queen Aminat Adebukola Wahab, popularly known as Shawttynatt, is an accomplished entrepreneur, advocate and social media influencer, known for her strong values and enviable work ethics. In this interview with YEJIDE GBENGA-OGUNDARE, she speaks on how challenges in entrepreneurship help to develop values and inner strength, managing cyberbullying, women in leadership and other issues. Excerpts:
What’s your experience as a female entrepreneur?
Being a female entrepreneur has been a journey marked by its own unique set of challenges and triumphs. While there may be certain industries or ventures traditionally dominated by men, I firmly believe that success in entrepreneurship transcends gender. Throughout my experience, I’ve encountered highs and lows, each contributing to my growth and resilience.
Navigating the business world as a woman has allowed me to challenge norms and pave my own path. It’s about breaking barriers, embracing diversity, and proving that gender is not a limitation but a source of strength. My journey has been a testament to the fact that with determination, creativity, and perseverance, women can excel in any entrepreneurial endeavour. Every setback has been an opportunity for learning, and every success a validation of my capabilities.
I wouldn’t trade the rollercoaster ride of being a female entrepreneur for anything. It has shaped me into the leader I am today and I’m grateful for every experience that has brought me to this present moment.
The theme for IWD is inclusion, how does this help women in business?
The theme of inclusion for International Women’s Day is particularly significant for women in business. Inclusion fosters an environment where diverse voices are heard, valued and actively included in decision-making processes. For women in business, this means breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for equal participation and representation. When women feel included and empowered in the business world, they can bring unique perspectives, ideas, and talents to the table. This not only drives innovation but also enhances the overall performance and success of businesses.
Moreover, inclusion promotes a culture of support and collaboration, where women are encouraged to thrive and succeed without fear of discrimination or bias. It creates a level playing field where talent and merit are recognised and rewarded, regardless of gender. Ultimately, the theme reinforces the importance of creating inclusive environments where women in business can flourish, contribute meaningfully, and achieve their full potential
How does inflation affect your business and how do you navigate that rough terrain?
Inflation undoubtedly poses challenges for my business, particularly in terms of purchasing power. As the cost of goods and services increases, the capital I have on hand may not stretch as far as it once did, affecting my ability to buy merchandise at the same volume or price. However, I have navigated through this rough terrain by adopting a strategic approach. While my initial capital may not have the same purchasing power, I’ve focused on maximizing my resources and making every penny count. Through careful budgeting and resource allocation, I have been able to adapt to fluctuating costs and maintain my operations.
Additionally, I have leveraged the profits generated by my business to sustain our growth and offset the impacts of inflation. By reinvesting my earnings back into the business, I’ve strengthened my financial position and expanded my capabilities. This approach has allowed me to stay afloat despite the challenges posed by inflation, and even thrive in the face of adversity. While navigating inflationary pressures remains an ongoing concern, my commitment to prudent financial management and strategic reinvestment has enabled me to weather the storm and continue moving forward.
You were recently a victim of cyberbullying, how did you manage your emotion and what effect did it have on your business?
The online space today is both rewarding and toxic. As long as you have a prominent online presence, you will inevitably encounter both its rewards and its toxicity. Understanding this reality prepared me for the challenges that came my way. When I became a victim of cyberbullying, I chose to manage my emotions by staying focused on my goals and maintaining a positive outlook.
Instead of letting the negativity consume me, I rode the wave of toxicity while continuing to promote my business. I refused to let the trolls deter me from my mission. In doing so, I found strength in the support of friends and supporters who came to my defense.
Ironically, what the trolls intended to do harm to my business ended up having a positive effect in the long run. Their actions spurred an outpouring of support and solidarity which ultimately strengthened my online presence and enhanced my reputation. Through perseverance and the grace of God, I turned a negative experience into an opportunity for growth and resilience. To God be the glory.
There is a kind of stigma on single mothers, is this justified?
The topic of stigma surrounding single mothers is complex and multifaceted, with varying perspectives and experiences. While some may hold negative stereotypes, it’s important to recognise that every individual’s situation is unique and shouldn’t be generalised. Rather than focusing on whether the stigma is justified or not, I believe it’s more productive to advocate for empathy, understanding and support for all parents, regardless of their marital status. Each person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and we should strive to create a society that uplifts and empowers individuals from all walks of life.
Ultimately, the value of a person should not be determined by their relationship status, but by their character, resilience and contributions to their families and communities.
What are your thoughts about women in politics and leadership?
I firmly believe that women should be fully supported in their endeavors to participate in politics and leadership roles. In any society, progress and growth are intrinsically tied to the potentials and efforts of its people. By denying women opportunities in these spheres, we risk overlooking valuable perspectives, talents, and contributions that could greatly benefit our communities and society as a whole.
It is imperative that we recognize and embrace the diverse skills, experiences, and leadership qualities that women bring to the table. When women are given the chance to participate in politics and leadership, we create a more inclusive and representative democracy, where decisions are made with a broader understanding of the needs and aspirations of all citizens.
Ultimately, by empowering and supporting women in politics and leadership, we enrich our society and unlock its full potential. It’s not about giving special treatment, but rather ensuring equal opportunities for all individuals to contribute to the betterment of our world.
