What star ratings reveal about standard of a hotel

Published by

Hotel star ratings are a standardised way to evaluate and categorise hotels, based on their quality, amenities, and services. They typically range from one to five stars, with higher ratings indicating a higher quality stay and a five-star hotel providing a high-end luxury experience.

These rating systems can sometimes seem confusing or arbitrary, but they are traditionally relied upon by guests looking to make the best accommodation choices. While there are many different hotel star rating systems, all managed by different organisations in different countries, the general idea is that the higher your star rating, the better experience your hotel provides to guests overall – and therefore, the more attractive it is to future guests.

Fundamentally, hotel star ratings are a powerful piece of social proof, gathered from expert reviewers and/or other guests that serve as a valuable piece of marketing collateral, assuming you can secure a good score.

A common understanding of the quality of a hotel also makes it easier for guests to compare hotels and make booking decisions. For example, guests might want to understand which five-star hotel is most affordable. Or whether it’s worth it to pay extra for a five-star hotel compared to a three-star hotel. The star information facilitates these comparisons and decisions.

Here’s everything you need to know about hotel star ratings;

One-star rating

This rating category means the hotel provides basic accommodation, and small rooms but does not guarantee ensuite bathrooms, 24-hour reception, or daily cleaning. Think hostels or backpacker motel rooms. This level of accommodation is ideal for budget-conscious travellers who prioritise affordability and essential comforts during their travels.

Two-star rating

Hotel calibre with two-star ratings are often in old buildings that can’t be renovated. These properties are a step up from one-star spots in that they probably offer a 24-hour reception, cleaning, and a basic ensuite bathroom. Amenities are still limited, but you might get a continental breakfast and a room with a phone and TV. This combination of comfort and value makes two-star hotels a suitable choice for short stays or business trips.

Three-star rating

A typical hotel will have a three-star rating because it offers room service, ensuite bathrooms, daily cleaning, a desk or table, and Wifi. This is a standard hotel experience that most travellers expect unless they’re on a strict budget. These hotels cater efficiently to both leisure and business travellers, making them a popular choice for various travel needs.

Four-star rating

These hotels offer an on-site swimming pool, gym, bar/restaurant, or valet parking. They have nicer rooms and larger lobbies. Fast internet is standard. This level of accommodation is perfect for those seeking a sophisticated blend of luxury and comfort, suitable for special occasions and discerning travellers.

Five-star rating

A five-star rating hotel is a high-end, luxury hotel. There will be a nice bar and restaurant on-site, as well as a spa, gym, big bathrooms, and comfortable beds. The comprehensive, personalised services cater to every need of the guest, anticipating their every desire. This unparalleled level of luxury and indulgence creates an extraordinary and unforgettable stay, catering to the most discerning guests.
