I am a menopausal 52 year old mother of two. I just noticed a swelling of my two feet some months ago. Kindly let me know what could be the cause and what I can do about it.

Anyone can experience swollen feet from time to time. It’s common — especially after walking or standing for long periods — and it’s often remedied by resting and elevating those tired legs. Leg oedema is common during air travel. Sometimes however, swelling (also called oedema) is a red flag for a more serious underlying problem. The most common cause of leg oedema in people over age 50 is chronic venous insufficiency, a condition that affects up to 30 percent of the population. In some cases, oedema may be a sign of a more serious underlying medical condition such as heart failure, liver cirrhosis or kidney disease. The medical history and physical examination will usually reveal whether these disorders are present or not. The treatment of oedema depends on the underlying cause. Reducing the amount of sodium in the diet may be helpful and so can general measures such as avoiding long periods of standing or sitting, regular exercise, and weight loss if overweight or obesity is present. Good skin hygiene is recommended. Using compression stockings and elevating the legs whenever possible is helpful.
