Military dictatorships are increasing in West African countries following the sudden overthrow of the government of President Muhammed Bazoum by the leader of presidential guards of Niger Republic on July 26. The leaderships of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and African union leaders were shocked to receive the news of the change of government in Niger.
The number of African countries that are currently under the military rule is six. They are as follows: Mali since August 2020 and Burkina Faso since January 2022. Chad is not left out as the military has been in control of government since April 2021. Sudan is also currently under the military rule. Soldiers took over power in October 2021.
There was a public outcry from other African countries currently under the civil rule following the military intervention in Niger. What kind of leadership do we really need in Africa?
Is there anything the ECOWAS can do stop further coups d’état? ECOWAS should be careful to avoid a war in the region.
The rich including the politicians who have stolen the public funds will escape with their family members should a war begin.
The leadership of ECOWAS is expected to think of what to do stop further coup d’états in Africa. We need honest and exceptionally good leaders in Africa who will not steal public funds in Africa.
What I think ECOWAS should do is to set up a committee to monitor democratically elected African presidents and make them accountable.
If this is done, it will prevent the military from taking over power. Some democratically elected presidents in African countries are not doing enough to liberate the poor masses from the shackles of poverty. We all watched how the masses of Niger Republic were jubilating when the news of change of government reached them.
However, military dictatorship is frowned on across the globe. The ECOWAS must work to prevent another coup d’état in the region.
