Yeast infection is caused by an imbalance of naturally occurring bacterial flora, the usual bacteria found in a woman’s vagina. It’s not easy to identify but you can notice that they’re itchy and uncomfortable, and no one really likes to talk about them. But vaginal yeast infections are very common in women. It’s estimated that 75% of women will have at least one yeast infection in her lifetime.

Though yeast infections can happen to anyone at any time, there are certain things that make getting them more likely. Most infections can be cleared up quickly and easily. The vagina normally contains a healthy balance of bacteria and yeast. The hormone estrogen helps bacteria called lactobacilli to grow. These bacteria kill harmful organisms in the vagina and keep you healthy. But when something happens to tip that balance, a fungus called candida can grow out of control and cause a yeast infection.

Itchiness and discomfort are the main symptoms of a yeast infection, but there are others. You may also experience any or all of the following: Burning, redness, and swelling of the vagina and the vulva (the outer part of the female genitals) Pain or burning when you pee. Pain during sex. A thick, white, odorless discharge, similar to cottage cheese Yeast infections can be prevented through the following; wearing breathable cotton underwear: Opt for cotton underwear and change it regularly to keep the area dry. Avoid

Tight Clothing: Stay away from tight-fitting clothes that can trap moisture and create a warm environment for yeast to thrive.

Practice Good Hygiene: Wash the genital area gently but thoroughly and ensure it’s completely dry after bathing or showering. Skip Harsh

Products: Avoid using harsh soaps, scented products, or douches in the genital area as they can irritate and upset the natural balance. Practice

Safe Sex: Use barrier protection like condoms to prevent yeast infections from spreading between partners. Watch Your Diet: Maintain a healthy diet low in sugar and starches as yeast feeds on these substances. Manage Medical Conditions: Keep underlying medical conditions like diabetes under control, as they can increase the risk of yeast infections. Be Mindful of Hot Environments: Avoid hot tubs and scalding hot baths as heat and moisture can encourage yeast growth. Limit Antibiotic Use: Only take antibiotics when necessary, as they can disrupt the body’s bacteria balance, leading to yeast overgrowth.
