We’ve no Mpox case in Ogun — Govt

The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, announced that the state has not reported any cases of Mpox across its 20 local government areas.

In a statement released to journalists in Abeokuta, on Wednesday,  Dr Coker emphasized that the state has maintained rigorous surveillance since the global outbreak of Mpox in 2022.

“Mpox is a significant public health concern, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported outbreaks of a more virulent strain in some countries. Several states in Nigeria have also experienced Mpox outbreaks,” she stated.

“The Ogun State Ministry of Health is fully aware of this public health threat and has implemented appropriate measures to prevent, detect early, and respond effectively to any potential cases.

“Our last recorded case of Mpox in Ogun State was in May 2023, and no confirmed cases have been reported since.

“As of August 18, 2024, our state surveillance system has identified 151 suspected Mpox cases, but none have been confirmed. However, 53 of these cases tested positive for Chickenpox.

“We are aware of the Chickenpox cases in the state and have already taken the necessary steps to address them.

“Ongoing public sensitization efforts on Mpox, Chickenpox, and other priority diseases are being conducted through established channels. Therefore, there is no cause for alarm.”
