We’re mobilising stakeholders against road crashes, death ― FRSC boss

CORPS Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, has assured that the commission is mobilising critical stakeholders for an all-round campaign against the menace of road crashes, death and obstructions as the Christmas festive period approaches.

He gave the assurance while speaking in Ibadan during the recent commissioning of the Oyo State Sector Command Office Complex of the FRSC, calling every Nigerians to rise up against the menace of road traffic crashes.

Oyeyemi said the FRSC was mapping out appropriate strategies to address the perennial road traffic challenges which characterised the festive period often attached to the “Ember” months, adding that road safety was a collective responsibility of all Nigerians.

“Everyone must, however, take issues of road safety with all seriousness, bearing in mind that road safety is a shared responsibility to which every patriotic citizen must actively get involved in.

“Accordingly, we are stepping up collaboration with relevant stakeholders for advocacy and enforcement strategies against non-use of seatbelt by drivers and passengers, non-adherence to minimum safety standards by drivers of tankers and trailers, route violation, drinking under the influence of alcohol/drugs and traffic lights violation.

“To this end, all relevant stakeholders including transport unions, other law enforcement agencies and civil society organisations are being mobilised for the all-round campaigns against the menace of road traffic crashes, death and obstructions that are annually recorded during the festivities,” he said.

Speaking on the new office complex of the FRSC, Oyo State Sector, the Corps Marshal said it was yet another milestone in the management’s vision to construct permanent office structures to serve as our offices across the country.

“Since the last four years of this management, we have remained committed to building permanent office structures across the states of the federation as a demonstration of our commitment to the policy of adequate office accommodation for improved productivity of our personnel.

“This commissioning today marks the seventh in the series of the office complexes that we have commissioned over the last four years across the six geopolitical zones of the country,” he added.

He said the Oyo State Sector played a pioneering role in creating the enabling environment for the seeds of road safety to be planted in the state and thanked successive administrations in the State, especially the Governor Abiola Ajimobi-led government for taking the road safety ideals to greater heights through unprecedented commitment to issues of road safety.

In his remarks at the occasion, Governor Ajimobi said the state government would continue to do its best to support FRSC and indeed, other security agencies to ensure that they give their best to the people of the State.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Chief Moses Adeyemo, said his administration provided the land for the building of the office complex, as a consolidation of its commitment of the government to giving the commission a structure that would provide a convenient ambience to aid the efficient and effective performance of its responsibilities to the people.

“I am confident that this building, with all its conveniences, will be a morale booster to the officers and men of the FRSC and will further enhance a cordial and mutual beneficial relationship between the Corps and the state government and by extension, ensure better service delivery to the people of Oyo State,” he said.
